The ever-cheerful and popular puzzle teaser Sammy Kimmell from One Spoiled Cat is our interview subject for today. He’s a Cat Scout so you can believe every word he meows.
Funny Farmer Felines: Would you introduce yourself and your humans?
Sammy: My name is Sammy Kimmell and I’m a 14-year old ginger polydactyl cat in a one-cat household, living with my Mom and Dad in a big house in Warrenton, Virginia.
We live at the edge of a woods so I get to see a lot of wildlife out my windows. (I’m a mostly indoor kitty) Deer, skunks, groundhogs, chipmunks, birds, other kitties, and once – just once (!) – a black bear!!
Funny Farmer Felines: How did you come to live with your humans?
Sammy: I was found under an old abandoned house all by myself as a young kitten and taken to the animal shelter in Warrenton. My Mom and Dad came to the shelter to look for a kitten after they’d recently had to send their cat to the Bridge after a long illness. And there I was in my little cage playing with a plastic ball with a bell. I was all alone and tiny, and when I saw them, I poked my big paw with the extra toe on it OUT the cage and meowed real loud. They fell in love with me and took me home with them that VERY day!
Funny Farmer Felines: Do you have any nicknames?
Sammy: My Mom calls me all kinds of embarrassing things….Samster,: Punkin’, Sammy Whammy….see? Humans are so funny sometimes.
Funny Farmer Felines: Tell us a little about the area where you live.
Sammy: Warrenton is about an hour and a half outside of Washington, DC in the beautiful Virginia countryside. It’s much quieter here than where my parents lived closer to the big city. My parents bought this property and built this house up on a hill with lots of lovely green munchable, crunchable grass all around.
Funny Farmer Felines: Do you have a special ladycat friend?
Sammy: YES, I do! Her name is Sundae, and she lives in another town in Southern Virginia. We have had an internet romance/friendship for several years.
Her mom, Miss Dianna, has a blog called “These Days of Mine” and that’s how my Mom and Sundae’s Mom met! Sundae is a beautiful calico kitty and we send emails to each other every single day.
Funny Farmer Felines: You like to do Tuesday Teasers and Guest Teasers. How did this come about?
Sammy: My Mom and Dad have traveled a LOT and have tons of photo albums from their adventures around the world. Mom thought it might be fun to let people guess where some of the photos she has were taken and it turned out to be true. We have TONS of people who tune in every Tuesday to take a guess and maybe win an award for being the first right guesser, or guessing it right at all, or even if they don’t guess right, I have a special award for them too! We also enjoy having someone ELSE send us a photo to use for Tuesday Teasers and that’s how the Guest Teasers got started. It’s so much fun.
Funny Farmer Felines: You also do frequent contests with prizes. Tell us a little about them.
Sammy: I like to have special events and often they involve wearing a costume or special outfit, then letting all my friends vote for the best or funniest or most clever one. For instance, I’ve had a camping trip where people had to submit pictures of their tents decorated as they would like, and I’ve had a slumber party where people had to submit a photo of them in their pajamas to vote on the best ones. It’s fun to come up with something fun that people would enjoy participating in. With all the photo editing software out there, it’s EASY to join in the fun and I love to send presents to the winners.
Funny Farmer Felines: We see scouts all over the cat blogosphere and we’re pleased to see you have joined them. Can you tell us a little about why you joined and what you do?
Sammy: We learned about the Cat Scouts from the Cat Blogosphere and thought it might be a lot of fun. When I joined I started my own Troop in the Scouts called Warrenton Wildcats which I changed to Worldwide Wildcats as more and more cats joined up and joined MY Troop! We have 41 members now and I think it’s the biggest Troop. I’m the Troop Leader. It’s fun. We have different places we can meet like the “Campfire” where we tell stories and bring food to eat and share and sing songs. In Cat Scouts you earn merit badges by doing certain things or submitting photos of you doing things like “Bird Watching,” or “Basketry” – demonstrating different abilities or skills. We also have activities like the recent “Cardwood Derby” where we made race cars out of cardboard and submitted photos of ourselves in our cars to win prizes. I recently was promoted from “Tenderpaw” to “Bobcat” status in the Scouts. Am I proud? You betcha!
Funny Farmer Felines: You’ve been blogging since May 2011. Do you have any special plans for the future of your blog?
Sammy: Mom and I will continue to blog as long as we have fun with it and as long as our friends enjoy reading my blog. I seem to add more and more readers every week and we in turn follow more and more blogs so it CAN be a bit time-consuming but like I said, as long as it’s fun we’ll continue.
Funny Farmer Felines: What advice would you give to a newbie kitty blogger?
Sammy: I’d say find your joy in telling stories and making friends because the world of animal blogs and bloggers is full of incredibly kind, generous, humorous, loving, HAPPY people. Find your OWN voice – don’t follow the pack – you’ll stand out in the crowd if you just have FUN with it like we do.
Funny Farmer Felines: Thank you, Sammy. We haven’t known you very long so we’ve learned a lot and we’re sure others have too.
